Be the One

One person who doesn’t give up, who shows love and kindness, can change everything for a child. You have the ability to be that one person!

The Power of One Caring Adult

(Written by a group of teens living in our Residential care)

We are kids, and we know that sometimes we may not always be taken seriously, but we want to tell you something really important that we believe can change everything. You all have busy lives and a lot of responsibilities, but there’s something we want you to think about: the incredible power of one person in a child’s life.

One person who doesn’t give up, who shows love and kindness, can change everything for a child. We are asking you to remember the times when someone believed in you and how it made a difference in your life.

For us, that one person is a foster parent, a Pastor, a case worker, a youth treatment specialist, and Jesus, but it could be anyone. It doesn’t matter who they are, but what matters is that they all give us hope.

When we have someone who listens to us, encourages us, forgives us and helps us through hard times, we feel stronger. It gives us the courage to try again when we fail and reminds us that we are so much more than the reports written about us.

It’s amazing how much one person’s kindness and belief in us can help us believe in ourselves.

So, we’re asking you, the adults who shape our world, to think about the power you have.

You have the ability to be that one person in a child’s life who makes all the difference.

A simple encouraging phone call, a positive note when we’re struggling, or taking the time to really listen, can change everything. Imagine what could happen if every adult decided to be that person for just one child. It could create a ripple of positive change, one act of kindness at a time.

That’s how powerful you are.

About Wedgwood:

Since 1960, Wedgwood Christian Services has been dedicated to boldly taking on the toughest problems facing children and families through residential care, counseling services and community programs. Leaning on our faith and core values of integrity, compassion, excellence and diversity, we tackle the crucial work of supporting and restoring the wellbeing of all those who call West Michigan home.

We believe in the power of change, and we believe that it can start with you and us! You can be the one who helps us grow into the best version of ourselves. One encouraging person in our lives could help us reach our goals of curing cancer and AIDS, opening foodbanks, helping the homeless, improving countries use of fossil fuels, and refining the foster care system.

We challenge you to take one step to be that one person in a child’s life, the one who gives them hope and loves them so that our futures can be brighter, and our communities can be better. You don’t have to do everything, just be that one person who makes a difference.
