Frequently Asked Questions about Residential Treatment

Who do we serve? Wedgwood offers residential treatment for adolescents who have been abused and/or neglected, who are delinquents under the court system, or who have mental health issues. We treat youth with the following issues:

  • Trauma: physical, emotional or sexual abuse; neglect; troubled family relationships; adoption issues; emotional impairment.
  • Behavior problems: conduct disorders; impulsivity; sexual offenses; adjustment disorders; delinquency; substance abuse.
  • Organically-based disorders: hyperactivity; attention deficit; learning disabilities; depression; affective disorders; mood disorders.

What are the ages of the children we serve? We have one young boys’ residential program that serves ages 8 to 12 year olds. All other programs start around the age of 12 through the age of 17 for both boys and girls. Some exceptions can be considered.

How does a youth get referred? Please call our admissions department at 616.942.2110 for more information. If it is determined that a youth may be eligible, referral material can be sent or faxed to the Admissions Department. Our admissions staff is very knowledgeable about payment sources for our various programs and is happy to answer all questions.

How is treatment paid for? Wedgwood accepts payment from a wide variety of sources. Among these are the Department of Human Services, Community Mental Health, various community mental health connected agencies, juvenile courts, and Michigan Adoption Subsidy. Insurance companies only occasionally cover the costs of residential treatment but frequently will cover the costs of outpatient counseling. Wedgwood is not JCAHO accredited. Make sure your insurance company knows this.

What services are provided? Residents receive 24-hour care and supervision from highly-trained direct care staff. A carefully-designed program of milieu therapy promotes development of positive social interaction and trusting relationships with adult authority figures. Also included are Family therapy, Individual therapy, Group therapy, Adult Living Skills classes, Behavior Modification Programming, Psychiatric consultation services, Educational services, Employment Training Program, Activity therapy, Chaplain services, Medical services, and Respite.

What can residents bring? Residents wear their own clothing and can bring some personal belongings. A list of suggested items will be sent prior to the date of admission.

How long are residents at Wedgwood? Our average length of stay is nine to twelve months, depending on the program. Shorter-term placements can be made anywhere from 30 days to six months depending on the needs of the resident.

Am I allowed visitation? Phone contacts, letters, and visitation between the youth and family, friends, and workers are encouraged. A list of approved contact people will be developed with the referring agency worker, therapist, and family. When the youth has reached a certain level of trust, home visits can be arranged.

Is Wedgwood affiliated with a particular church or denomination? Wedgwood Christian Services is a non-denominational Christ-centered ministry. A copy of our statement of faith is available upon request.
