About Wedgwood: Our Story

Mission. Wedgwood Christian Services extends God's love to youth and families through professional counseling and educational services.

Overview and history. Wedgwood is is distinctively Christian with professionally excellent programs, dedicated to helping young people live productive and fulfilling lives.

Wedgwood began in 1960 as two separate, unrelated organizations: Christian Youth Homes for girls and Wedgwood Acres Christian Home for boys. Both were started with private funding by individuals with a heart for helping hurting kids.

They merged ten years later to form Wedgwood Acres-Christian Youth Homes. In 2002, the organization was renamed Wedgwood Christian Services to reflect the full continuum of care that we offer.

Today, Wedgwood continues as a private, non-profit human service agency dependent on private citizens to carry out our mission of reaching out to hurting youth. Wedgwood has provided comprehensive treatment for youth and families since 1960. We serve children, adults, and families from across the state.

Youth services include residential treatment, foster care, independent living, in-home intervention, outpatient counseling, and prevention. Our philosophy of care offers grace, promotes healing, and encourages learning.

In 2005, Wedgwood established Lighthouse Academy. This innovative street school filled a critical gap for permanently expelled students who had no other educational options. In 2008, Lighthouse Academy expanded its offerings for at-risk youth through a new charter school agreement with Ferris State University. With this charter status, Lighthouse serves a broader range of youth, including expelled, court-placed and special education students with behavioral issues.
